In
1951, Metropolitan Antony Bashir, Primate of the Archdiocese of
North America from 1936-1966, founded the Society of Orthodox Youth
Organization (S.O.Y.O.) The letters of abbreviation originally
stood for Syrian Orthodox Youth Organization.
Elizabeth
Haddad Smith is sponsor of the St. Andrew chapter of SOYO and
leads our young people in many good works and educational programs.
This year, Deacon Benjamin conducted a pre-Lenten retreat on the
Beatitudes. The teens made a pilgrimage to the Hermitage of the
Holy Cross Monastery during Great Lent. Also in 2002, SOYO participated
in the Love Walk to raise funds for the Pregnancy Help Center. This
year (2003-2004) our fund raising focus will be toward purchasing
a Monk's "Cell" for a monk at the Hermitage of the Holy
Cross Monastory in Wayne, WV. We refer to this project as our "Bunk
- a - Monk" project.

has chosen St. Peter the Aleut as its patron and the teens are raising
funds to purchase a handwritten icon for the church nave.
